amendment regarding formaldehyde

New legal requirements for formaldehyde - Möbelfakta to remove corresponding requirement

Published 08 Oct 2026

Since 6 August 2026, new EU-wide limits for formaldehyde emissions from furniture and wood-based products have entered into force.

Furniture and wood-based products placed on the market must now comply with a formaldehyde emission limit of 0.062 mg/m³.

Möbelfakta has long included its own requirements for formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels. For MDF and HDF boards, the limit has been set at 65% of the E1 emission limit, while other wood-based panels, such as particleboard, plywood and OSB, have been required to meet 50% of the E1 emission limit.

As formaldehyde emissions are now regulated by law, Möbelfakta will remove the corresponding requirement in a future revision of the criteria. For certain wood-based panels, this means that the new legal limit is less stringent than the previous Möbelfakta requirement. At the same time, the legislation establishes a harmonised minimum level across the European market.

The requirement specification and subcontractor's certificate have been updated with information about this, see https://mobelfakta.se/en/resources-documents/
